Jag tror inte att jag är den enda som har märkt att många är missnöjda med valet av vilka som ska spela Peeta och Gale, speciellt på twitter har det haglat in kommentarer om hur Josh och Liam inte passar alls. Nu har Suzanne, Gary och Nina kommenterat detta, om varför de valde Josh och Liam.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: When did you know Jennifer Lawrence was your Katniss?
GARY ROSS: First I saw Winter’s Bone, and I just thought she was phenomenally talented and just kind of riveting and amazing and had so much power. And then we had a meeting and I found her to be just a completely compelling, intelligent person. But then she came in and read for me and it just knocked me out. I don’t want to go into too many details, but we did a scene from the movie and it was so amazingly powerful that it was sort of stunning. You glimpsed every aspect of the role and the potential of the whole movie.

There’s already quite a bit of hand-wringing that, no matter how good an actress Lawrence is, at 20 she’s simply too old for the role.
First of all I talked to Suzanne extensively about this. Suzanne saw every single audition. And not only did Suzanne not have an issue with Jen’s age, she felt you need someone of a certain maturity and power to be Katniss. This is a girl who needs to incite a revolution. We can’t have an insubstantial person play her, and we can’t have someone who’s too young to play this. Suzanne was incredibly adamant about this. Far from being too old, she was very concerned that we would cast someone who was too young. In Suzanne’s mind, and in mine, Katniss is not a young girl. It’s important for her to be a young woman. She’s a maternal figure in her family. She’s had to take care of Prim and in many ways her mother since her father’s death. She’s had to grow up pretty quick.

In the books, Katniss is described as being olive-skinned, dark-haired, possibly biracial. Did you discuss with Suzanne the implications of casting a blonde, caucasian girl?
Suzanne and I talked about that as well. There are certain things that are very clear in the book. Rue is African-American. Thresh is African-American. Suzanne had no issues with Jen playing the role. And she thought there was a tremendous amount of flexibility. It wasn’t doctrine to her. Jen will have dark hair in the role, but that’s something movies can easily achieve. [Laughs] I promise all the avid fans of The Hunger Games that we can easily deal with Jennifer’s hair color.

Have you had conversations with her about the enormity of stepping not just into a franchise like this, but a character that is already so beloved by the world? How do you prepare a young person for that?

Oh god, have you ever met her? [Laughs] Don’t worry about Jen Lawrence. She’s a very powerful person. Jennifer is from Kentucky. I think she feels such a complete connection to who Katniss is, the way many people do, but this just seems like a very good fit to her. I think she’s very confident about the role, I think it feels very organic to her. She’s ready to dive in. She goes to archery class next week. Yeah, she’s going to start shooting arrows next week! I think by the end of the week she’s going to be learning to climb trees. She’s a very strong, confident young woman. She’s very confident in her own talent and who she is as a woman, and I think that all these things make her want to dive into the role.

Casting Director: Debra Zane

Debra Zane har blivit utvald till Casting Director för The Hunger Games filmen! Hon har tidigare jobbat med regissören Gary Ross under två av hans tidigare filmer.

EW: Are you already hearing from kids who are afraid you’re going to screw up their favorite book?
Ross: [Laughs] I just received 150 letters from the Frenship Middle School near Lubbock, Texas. The reading-program teacher got them to all write me letters. So many of them wrote, “Listen, I know this is an action movie and I can’t wait to see the action but please don’t lose the heart of the story.” The death of Rue is mentioned by every kid who reads the book. It’s funny because I realize the letters are from Lubbock, Texas, which is where Buddy Holly was from. So in a way it’s the birthplace of American teenage rebellion. Isn’t that cool?

EW: Did they give you useful advice?
Ross: A lot of them talked about “Don’t mess with the colors.” I think they didn’t want me to pump it full of contrast or desaturate the movie or make it gratuitously edgy in a visual way. I think kids are hipper to clichés than we are sometimes.

EW: How much CGI will be involved? I imagine you’ll need some for the Muttations, the book’s genetically altered creatures?
Ross: It’s funny because the Lubbock kids—back to Lubbock, I’m dying to go to this school!—also expressed how important it was for me to adequately render the Muttations. And yes, we will.
Obviously they’re one of the larger technical challenges, but they will be animated CG characters.

EW: What scene do you most look forward to shooting?
Ross: I can’t wait to shoot the firestorm from a filmmaking perspective. I can’t wait to do the relationship with Rue— both developing the relationship between Katniss and Rue and also the poignancy of Rue’s funeral. How Katniss decorates her body with flowers? I mean, it’s just so beautiful.

The rumors are true. Director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) will direct the Lionsgate adaptation of The Hunger Games, the first installment of Suzanne Collins’ brilliantly urgent dystopian trilogy. In his first conversation anywhere about the film, which Lionsgate told EW will likely go into production in the late spring of 2011, Ross was funny, passionate, and sounded as deeply impressed and moved by heroine Katniss Everdeen as the trilogy’s ardent fans.

Ross revealed that he hadn’t yet met with any actresses but would begin those conversations shortly. Admirers of Katniss, District 12′s dark and resilient “Tribute,” can rest assured that the director won’t dumb the character down or cutesy her up for the movie. “I’ve talked to Suzanne extensively and I feel like I understand the character really, really well,” he said. “I feel like I know who that girl needs to be.”

Technically, it's not official yet -- but Gary Ross is almost a done deal to direct The Hunger Games movie adaptation.

According to Variety, Ross is in final talks with Lionsgate to help the adaptation of Suzanne Collins' best-selling novel. Ross appeared this week at the American Film Market (AMF) conference on behalf of Lionsgate to help promote the upcoming Hunger Games project.

Ross has been the rumored front-runner for the job for several weeks now. Collins herself even called him "the one" when asked about a director for The Hunger Games.

At last word, producers were hoping to begin production on The Hunger Games movie in early 2011 -- with a theatrical release in 2012. Collins wrote the screenplay, which was later polished by veteran screenwriter Billy Ray.

"Suzanne said she thought Gary Ross (rumored to be the likely director for The Hunger Games) was a great guy after having had a phone conversation with him. She also said from the indications she’s been receiving from Lionsgate and the producers, he’s “the one.”
Thus far, Suzanne said she has submitted two draft screenplays to Lionsgate, and they also have a screenwriter (Billy Ray) working on rewrites. She also said that since she wrote the books, she’d prefer to let someone else do the screenplay! However, she’s been very involved in the whole process, and they are working hard to be true to the book, although its extremely hard to condense nearly 400 pages into 2 hours of film."

Gary Ross is in early talks to direct The Hunger Games, the first installment of the novel trilogy by Suzanne Collins. The film is a joint production between Lionsgate and Color Force’s Nina Jacobson. Filming will start next year with a script by Billy Ray, who rewrote a draft by the author. The huge sales of the trilogy make the film adaptations a potential game-changer for Lionsgate, the way that Twilight was for Summit Entertainment. It has been a coveted job among directors (Three More Directors Circle ‘The Hunger Games’), and Lionsgate picture chief Joe Drake and Jacobson spent the past two weeks meeting candidates that included Sam Mendes, David Slade (also a contender for the X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2 job), Andrew Adamson, Rupert Sanders, and Nanny McPhee Returns helmer Susanna White. There was also talk about Francis Lawrence. It’s unclear who stayed in or out as Lionsgate focused on Ross, who directed Pleasantville and Seabiscuit. He isn’t set yet, but he is the choice. Let the negotiating games begin. Mendes, for instance, bowed out of contention last Friday, and I’m told it was because the MGM picture is clearing up and it looks like production on 007 could begin by late summer or early fall, 2011 with Mendes at the helm and Daniel Craig back in the Aston Martin.

Tre alternativ som regissörer av Hunger Games!

The next big film directing job in Hollywood will be decided late next week,. That’s when Lionsgate chooses a filmmaker for The Hunger Games, the first installment of a trilogy based on the Suzanne Collins novel series that many feel could be the next Twilight. I’m told that Lionsgate has gotten Billy Ray’s rewrite, and will meet with three elite directors next week before making a decision. Gary Ross, Sam Mendes and David Slade have emerged as the favorites. The script has become one of those closely guarded documents which do not leave the production company’s headquarters. I’ve also heard Andrew Adamson’s name in the mix, but it appears to be down to the three I mentioned.
